Home care in
Norwich, CT.

Norwich is close to an hour's drive from our Hartford office, so when a family there calls, the first thing we talk through is what we can actually staff.

Norwich has one hospital, Backus Hospital on Washington Street, close to where the Route 2 expressway comes into the city, and Norwichtown Rehabilitation and Care Center on West Town Street takes short-term rehabilitation stays. Some Norwich families will be bringing someone home from Lawrence + Memorial Hospital on Montauk Avenue in New London instead, or from a hospital in Hartford. Whichever it is, the discharge date is the most useful thing you can give us early. Golden Touch is non-medical, so what a caregiver takes on at home is the everyday part: a hot meal, help in and out of the shower, getting dressed, reminders through the day, the laundry and the pharmacy run, and company in the hours the family cannot be there.

Norwich housing is old and varied. The city's 2022 affordable housing plan describes a stock with a large share of pre-1929 buildings, and more two-family houses, townhouses and buildings of more than three units than most towns in southeastern Connecticut. For a caregiver that often means a bedroom up a flight of stairs, a bathroom that was never laid out for a shower chair, and, in a rented unit, a landlord to ask before a grab bar goes in. The ground matters too. Neighborhoods such as Laurel Hill, Jail Hill, Ox Hill and Plain Hill are named for hills, and the East Side runs up into the hills above the Shetucket River, so the walk from the door to the car can be the part of the day that needs a steady arm, especially in winter. Greeneville and Taftville, the old mill villages on the Shetucket, are a different setting again, and in Taftville the Ponemah Mill has been redeveloped into apartments. That is why a Norwich plan starts at the front door and works inward.

The Rose City Senior Center at 8 Mahan Drive is open on weekdays. It runs its own rides to and from the center and a weekday lunch, and both have to be booked ahead. A caregiver can take care of those arrangements, drive your parent there instead, or be at the house when the afternoon ride pulls up. If your parent lives in one of the Norwich Housing Authority's buildings for older residents, such as Eastwood Court on Stanley Place or Rosewood Manor, a caregiver still needs to know the entrance, the elevator or stairs, and where to park before the first shift.

Getting to Norwich

Norwich City Hall at 100 Broadway is 41.1 miles from our office at 696 Park Street in Hartford, about 53 minutes on clear roads, nearly all of it on Route 2. That is a real drive, and we plan any Norwich schedule around it rather than pretending it is not there.

Questions from Norwich families.

My father is coming home from Backus next week. Can someone be there on the day?

We cannot promise that from a web page, and we would not want you to count on it. Norwich is new ground for us and close to an hour from our Hartford office, so a schedule here may mean finding the right caregiver first. Call as soon as you have the discharge date. We will tell you straight away whether that day can be covered and, if it cannot, when the first visit realistically could be. Request a free consultation on (860) 393-1055.

How soon can a caregiver start in Norwich?

Norwich is newer ground for us, so we do not quote a start time before we have talked. On the first call we will tell you plainly how soon a caregiver can be in place for the hours you need, and if we cannot cover them, we will say so and point you to someone who can.

What does in-home care cost in Norwich?

Cost depends on the hours and level of care. Most families pay privately; long-term care insurance, VA benefits and Medicaid can help. You get a clear quote on your first call.

Can you provide 24-hour or live-in care in Norwich?

Live-in and around-the-clock care are part of what we offer, from one dedicated caregiver. For Norwich, tell us the hours you need on the first call and we will tell you honestly whether we can staff them.

Are your caregivers screened and insured?

Every caregiver is background-checked, bonded, insured and trained, and supervised by our Care Coordinator. If the match is not right, we re-match at no charge.
