Home care in
Storrs, CT.

Storrs is a village inside the town of Mansfield, not a town of its own, and home to UConn's main campus; Golden Touch is now available to families with a parent living here.

Storrs has the university but no hospital. UConn's own hospital, John Dempsey Hospital, is at UConn Health's main campus in Farmington, on the far side of Hartford. The nearest hospital to the village is Windham Hospital in Willimantic, about 16 minutes south of the campus on clear roads, and the nearest short-term rehab is the Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, which uses a Storrs mailing address. In the village itself, UConn Health has an office at One Royce Circle, and the Nash-Zimmer Transportation Center on the same street has a parking garage, which is worth knowing if a caregiver is driving your parent to an appointment there. Wherever your parent is coming home from, a non-medical caregiver's job is the day around recovery: help in the shower, meals that actually get eaten, laundry, groceries, reminders, and the ride to and from appointments.

Storrs is shaped by the university, and most of the people living in the village are of student age. The downtown development built from the mid-2000s puts shops, offices and apartments together. In a village like this the neighbors can change with the school year, so a caregiver who comes on the same days each week can be one of the steady faces in an older person's week. The school calendar affects the roads too. At move-in, UConn has in past years encouraged drivers who are not moving in to use other routes around the campus in daylight hours, so visits in late August need extra time and the parking worked out in advance. Whether your parent lives in a house near campus or an apartment downtown, the first visit is when we look at the entrance, the stairs and where a car can actually stop.

Downtown Storrs is where much of the village's everyday business happens, with grocery stores, banks and shops in the same development, and Betsy Paterson Square, where the town's downtown partnership holds community events. The Mansfield town hall is on South Eagleville Road, and the Nash-Zimmer Transportation Center on Royce Circle is the village's bus hub. A Windham Region Transit District bus runs toward Willimantic, and a CTtransit express runs between Storrs and Hartford, which helps if family is visiting from the city without a car. The Mansfield Senior Center is a short drive away on Maple Road. A caregiver can fit a slow walk around the square, a lunch at the senior center or the weekly grocery trip into the visit, so your parent keeps doing the things they enjoy without having to do the driving.

Getting to Storrs

The UConn Student Union on Hillside Road, on the Storrs campus, is 26.2 miles from our Park Street office, about 39 minutes on clear roads by way of I-84, I-384 and Route 44, practically the same drive as to the Mansfield town hall. Weekday traffic on I-84 and the extra traffic of move-in weekend can both add to that.

Questions from Storrs families.

My mother lives in Storrs. Is that part of Mansfield, and will you really send someone this far from Hartford?

Storrs is a village inside the town of Mansfield, not a separate town, so a Storrs address in the 06268 ZIP code is part of the Mansfield area now open to new families. It is about 40 minutes from our Park Street office on clear roads, and because we are new here, we may need to find and introduce the right caregiver before visits can begin. When you call, we will say how long that is likely to take and how we would plan around the university calendar. Request a free consultation on (860) 393-1055.

How soon can a caregiver start in Storrs?

Storrs is newer ground for us, so we do not quote a start time before we have talked. On the first call we will tell you plainly how soon a caregiver can be in place for the hours you need, and if we cannot cover them, we will say so and point you to someone who can.

What does in-home care cost in Storrs?

Cost depends on the hours and level of care. Most families pay privately; long-term care insurance, VA benefits and Medicaid can help. You get a clear quote on your first call.

Can you provide 24-hour or live-in care in Storrs?

Live-in and around-the-clock care are part of what we offer, from one dedicated caregiver. For Storrs, tell us the hours you need on the first call and we will tell you honestly whether we can staff them.

Are your caregivers screened and insured?

Every caregiver is background-checked, bonded, insured and trained, and supervised by our Care Coordinator. If the match is not right, we re-match at no charge.
